“ Meara!” The whispers started again, soft but notable. I tensed, my eyes snapping open. I scanned the field, but there was no one in sight. The sound seemed to come from the tree itself, from the rustling of its leaves. I pressed my palms against the rough bark and closed my eyes, focusing on the whispers. " Come... find... me..." The words were faint but distinct. My heart raced. Was I losing my mind, or was there something more to these whispers? I stood up, brushing the dirt off my jeans, and took a few steps back. The whispers grew louder, more insistent.

He darted up the stairs, or I assumed he did. Once he started moving I couldn’t see anything but a shifting shadow against the dark. He didn’t make a sound as he moved. For all I could see or hear there was nothing on the stairs but a shadow. We waited. I barely dared to breathe. The vampire woman put a hand on my shoulder. I wasn’t sure whether she was offering comfort, or trying to keep me close.

A low, rhythmic thrumming began to emanate from his chest—the sound of a hard drive spinning up to execute a command. "Target... unstable," the Silas-Sentry droned. "Initiating...
