I ran my fingers across the spines as I walked through the foyer, noting how silver glitter fell softly off every book. I looked down and saw the ground was littered with sparkling silver dust. It was strange dust though, it didn’t stick to my boots. It seemed to just stay in place, sparkling and taunting me, as if beckoning me to lean down and attempt to wipe it with my own fingers. I refrained in fear that if I touched it there, it might whisk me away from this magical place.

" I choked out, clutching the manuscript against my chest as I backed away until my spine hit the cold stone wall. ​Gabriel smiled—a slow, terrifying curve of his lips as he stepped into the dim beam of light. ​"I told you before, little bird," Gabriel whispered, reaching out to take the corner of the parchment from my trembling hands. "There is nowhere in this town where my shadow can not reach."

A shimmer of moonlight on steel. Elira’s dagger was in her hand instantly. “We’re not alone.” Figures emerged from the shadows—tall, cloaked, their eyes glinting like stars. Their movements were silent, precise, deadly. Elves. One stepped forward, lowering his hood. His hair was gold as wheat, his features sharp and cold. His gaze swept over Kaelen before settling on Elira. “Liraethiel,” he said, voice like steel wrapped in velvet. “You’ve broken exile.”

The city burned. Silver More, once a kingdom of marble spires and moonlit banners, was shrouded in smoke and shadow. The rift in the heavens had widened, bleeding starlight and darkness in equal measure. Cracks of raw magic split the streets, leaving jagged scars across stone and earth. And in the midst of it all stood Maelor—silver wolf, shadowed titan, his fur rippling with threads of black fire. His laughter shook the foundations of the palace itself.

As the shadow pressed forward, a sudden howl rang out. The silver wolf appeared, its crescent mark glowing brightly in the darkness. The shadow let out a deafening roar, its form beginning to crumble. “You are not alone,” the wolf’s voice echoed in Lyla’s mind. With one final surge of energy, Lyla and the silver wolf unleashed a wave of light that engulfed the shadow. When the light faded, the shadow was gone.

“Your father believes it was rogues. I believe it was something else.” I stood up. My legs were stiff from sitting so long. “What do you mean?” “Did you see the silver light, boy?” “Everyone saw it.” The memory hurt. Sera kneeling there, her power pouring out of her like a broken dam. Her eyes had been pure silver. Not the primal wolf-gold she used to have, not human. Something ancient, terrifying, and beautiful.
