I stood on my toes, stretching for the handle. That’s when his free arm wrapped around my waist, pulling me firmly against him. The suitcase was forgotten. With his other hand, he produced a pendant. It was different from the last one—smaller, with a crystal that held a captive, swirling silver mist. “I’ve arranged the security for Silver Mountain,” he said, his voice a murmur against my temple. “The guards will be with you, but out of sight. If you’re in danger, for any reason, you squeeze this crystal. Hard. It will alert me directly.”

He leaned very close, his warm breath brushing against my ear, sending a slight tickle through me. I turned my head, meeting his deep gaze. At that moment, time seemed to stand still, freezing everything into eternity. “Happy Winter Solstice Festival, Xaibe.” He leaned in close to my ear, murmuring softly, “On the next full moon night, let us go to the Moon Goddess to mark our bond.” Outside the window, the aurora continued its dance across the night sky, its brilliant colors reflecting upon my face and onto Xaibe's face. Jolting slightly at the distant ping of her laptop, she stood, crossed back into her workshop, and skimmed the email from the new metal supplier she’d been trying to get in touch with for the last three weeks. The man was squirrely, anxious, and never answered her calls, but from her research, he was worth the effort. It was expensive and damn near impossible to get ahold of, but it was the only metal that felt right. She’d tried dozens of other, more readily available kinds, but they all felt… dead, empty. Alexa cuts in excitedly. Facing her, "What do you mean by my face has changed, Alexa?" I was getting more confused by the minute. "Okay, you need to see it for yourself to know what we are saying." Saying this, she grabbed my hand, brought me to the car door window, and pointed, "Look.". Still confused, I slowly turned my head to the window and was shocked by what I saw. My straight ebony-black with strips of silver has completely turned into wavy silver with strips of gold and is reaching my waistline.
