I began to draw in the dirt, right next to her circles, tracing the outline of a simple flower with round petals.
Several minutes passed in complete silence, broken only by the distant sounds of the other children and the rustling of the willow leaves in the wind. Suddenly, Sorine’s branch stopped moving. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw her little head turn, millimeter by millimeter, toward my drawing. Her eyes, a deep, dark brown, were fixed on my rough flier.
With a timid movement, Sorine extended her branch and drew a small leaf on the stem of my flower. Then she withdrew again, glancing sideways at me to see my reaction.
