Iris said at last, her voice quieter, heavier with something long carried, “there is something I’ve never fully told you.”
Lucien’s gaze sharpened. He leaned forward slightly, instinctively attuned to the shift in her tone.
“You know why Seryna was bound,” Iris continued. “That her freedom would have brought ruin to the world. That much is true.” Her eyes held his. “But it is not the whole truth.”
Lucien said nothing. He didn’t interrupt. He only listened.
“Seryna and your mother were once… good sisters,” Iris said. “Not allies, not even rivals. Sisters in the truest sense of the word.” A faint, sad breath escaped her. “Until the question of succession arose.”
