I want my brave brother to go and kill a bear, skin it and bring me it’s coat to make mine. It will be a good gift for my wedding from him.” The son of a bitch really did want me dead as much as I wanted him dead.

Why not have it transferred to a remote location? The Don scratched his unshaven jaw and scowled. Why did he get the feeling that they were being led along like blind fools? That this entire affair was a staged one? Shrugging into his Kevlar vest, he turned to look at the Bear. The man was beside himself with grief. Apparently, his sister had died, leaving the child with him, in his custody; the Bear’s wife was a silent spirit, hiding in the shadows, rarely venturing out of the kitchen. They were a childless couple. But the Bear’s mother was a bent old woman who peered at her guests and tried to speak to them in her broken English.

“That’s the myth. Reality’s messier.” “You were using my pack as cover,” Rowan said. “Hunting. Hiding.” Joe didn’t deny it. “Your wolves are loud. Confident. Everyone knows about the upcoming mating. Your men are restless, desperate for their own bonds.” “Enough,” Rowan snapped. “What happened to your sleuth?” Joe finished taping his wound and reached for a bottle of whiskey, downing a mouthful before answering. “A few months ago,” he said, voice rough, “something tore through us. A bear but not like any I’ve ever seen. Bigger. Stronger. Savage beyond reason.” His grip tightened on the bottle. “He killed my brother in front of me.”

Once they were in position, I imitated Bonnie's voice from deep in my abdomen and let out a loud shout, ensuring it would grab the bear's attention. Then I swiftly retreated behind a large tree. The bear flinched, its body stiffening as its head jerked toward the sound. With a powerful leap, it charged.

Josh froze, the paw he was about to slip inside the open tent still poised in the air. Slowly, he turned and stared at the largest black bear he had ever seen. Shifters were notoriously larger than their natural counterparts, but this bear was even larger than that. I…uh…well, this is awkward, Josh finally sent through the mindspeech of their animals. I wasn't trying to be nosy, so much as looking for someone who threatened a friend of mine. No offense.

He glanced over his shoulder, a sinister smile curving across his face as he ran his tongue against his teeth. "It would take more than an assassin or knives to kill a beast like my brother."

Tyr came all the way to the yard where Silas lived, leaving a row of deep footprints behind him Grizzly Bear was squatting by the door and building a snowman, constructing a rather hilarious scene. It came as a surprise that this guy was actually doing a childish activity. Grizzly Bear didn't seem to be bothered by the cold. This guy was swimming in a glacier the last time Tyr saw him, and now he was building a snowman. He even went so far as to only wear a white tank top.
