Wren's whole body goes still. The spoon stops halfway to the pot, water hissing against the burner behind her, and for one full second she forgets to breathe at all. "What pictures, baby?" Fern doesn't answer right away. She opens the sketchbook instead, flips past pages of careful, precise drawings, houses and dogs and one recurring sketch of three stick figures holding hands under a tree, until she lands on a page near the back. It's a face. A rough, five-year-old attempt at a face, dark hair, a hard line for a jaw, done in the same grey pencil Fern uses for everything she isn't sure how to name yet.

After buying the supplies we went to a picnic area and sat down. I began sketching something. I wasn't sure what it was going to be but I let my mind wander. "Here's a better representation," There's a short stick laying between us and I pick it up, drawing the shape of a human face on the beach sand. I start out by drawing out two 'o's as the eyes with curved brows at the top. A small triangle is drawn next to display his small but pointy nose, and then lastly, strike out a straight horizontal line as his mouth. Noah stares at the silly drawing on the sand that now looks like a hairless mutant and raises a curved brow. "It's missing both ears."

I wrote the outline for the next installment of my series. This one concentrated more on the crazy fans. I called Stub and she was happy to email me files of costumed antics complete with names and contact information so I could get permission to use their pictures. After a moment, she gathered two handfuls of sketch papers and practically skipped back to Nathan. “Here!” she said brightly, handing them over with both palms like she was offering him treasure. Nathan took them gently and began flipping through each one. The pages were filled with color and feeling... some rough, some carefully shaded. He recognized many of the faces—her, him, a cat they used to feed behind the house. Some were strange, abstract, and chaotic, but he didn’t ask. He never did. “Wow. You drew me again,” he commented, holding up a new sketch of himself, sharp lines for his jaw, softer ones around his eyes.

I order and watch the boys run back towards the building as fast as they can. I watch with concern as the young boy they were picking on sniffs and works to pick up pieces of his sketchbook. I bend down and help him pick up the remaining pieces before they’re carried off by the wind. I look at one of the pieces of paper and can’t contain the awe on my face as I take in the amazing sketch before me. It’s this incredible real-life style drawing of a sirna with a vibrant red tail surrounded by all the elements. It takes me a second to recognise the likeness, but this is a sketch of the God Ezillus as a sirna! This might be the coolest thing I’ve ever seen. “You drew this?” I ask in astonishment

That is him. That is a sketch of me. I was sitting in the field looking up at the stars with a smile on my face. Without realizing it, my right hand drew fine sketch lines, thousands of lines layered and added to create an exact replica of that night, the twinkling stars in the sky, the glowing fireflies in the background, the view from the trees in the forest in the distance, and myself with a happy look in my eyes. As I put the picture on the floor, my breath started to hitch, and Darren's eyes widened when he saw it.
