I cried, kneeling beside her.
“I can’t,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “I can’t move…”
My heart raced as I tried to help her up, but her body was too weak. She couldn’t stand, couldn’t walk. I cursed under my breath, my mind spinning with panic. I had to get her out of here, but there was no time. The sound of hissing filled the air, and I looked up just in time to see one of the skin walkers slithering toward us. Its eyes glowed in the darkness, and its tongue flicked out, like a snake tasting the air.
