I watched with my heart in my stomach as my blood slowly dropped into his mouth and I was thankful for the fact that no one was around here. For I couldn't afford any scandals over this. POV: Asher. I’m sprinting through Brooklyn’s docks, heart pounding, Skinwalker spark blazing as I track Ember’s scent. The burner phone from Donavan’s aide led me here—Pier 7, red warehouse. My senses scream she’s in danger, and my Moon Eyes vision from earlier showed me running, so I know she sees me coming. I shift mid-stride, bones snapping, fur erupting, wolf form tearing free. The warehouse looms ahead, and I move lightning-fast, time bending around me.

I stood alone in the middle of the hall utterly immovable, rooted in place. I won't let this happen under my watch! As the last bits of Elias's form melted into a swirling, shapeless mass, a rotten smell of decay and black magic washed over the hall. This made some of the people there gag and dizzy. For a pause, the still-shifting shape seemed to hold an undecided, almost alive evil behind its grotesque changing form. Instead, to her shock, the stories were about shapeshifters, people who could change into the shape of a wolf. Whole villages apparently had that ability and when danger presented itself they shifted into their wolf shape, gathered as a pack and disappeared.
