With a deafening screech, something horrifying surged out of the sand, seized a mouthful of my skeletons, before diving back into the sand as if it were water, scattering bones in its wake.

“No. It’s just looking. It doesn’t see us. I hope.” I held my breath, watching as the creature’s hollow, glowing eyes scanned the clearing. For a moment, it seemed like it was staring right at me, and I could feel the cold sweat trickling down my spine. But then, just as quickly as it had appeared, the skinwalker turned and slithered away. I let out a shaky breath, my knees weak with relief. “We need to go,” Yara whispered, tugging me along. “Now.”
