Phineas slammed his palm against Solomon’s chest, right over the humming machinery Ignatius had stitched into his ribs. The heat was blistering. Phineas’s skin began to smoke where it touched the copper leads, but he ground his teeth together, the taste of copper and salt filling his mouth.
"Phineas..."
The voice was a dry, broken rattle. Solomon’s hand, scarred and trembling, reached up and caught Phineas’s wrist. The grip was weak, but the recognition was a physical jolt. The mindless snarl vanished, replaced by a sagging, exhausted grief.
