You must be insane. Lucille’s feet crept closer and closer to the edge. A sudden gust of wind blew through— She slipped. For a terrifying moment, it looked like she was about to plunge straight down, but she managed to steady herself although her face had gone completely pale with fear. Just as she hesitated, wondering whether she should truly jump, Shawn finally arrived. His face was dark, his voice cold as he yelled, "Lucille, are you out of your mind?! Get down from there! You don’t want to be fired? Fine, I won’t fire you! I’ll transfer you to a different department, okay?!"

“Not of this. Not of me. Not of what you are.” I swallowed. “Then help me understand it.” His eyes closed for one painful heartbeat. When they opened again, gold flared. “Fine. But we’re not doing it here.” He slipped an arm around my waist like he expected the floor to disappear under me at any moment. I almost told him I didn’t need the help, but the truth was. I clung back. We left the temple through the cracked stone doorway. The forest outside was dim, twilight stretched thin, shadows long and trembling. The air tasted wrong with metallic, like lightning had kissed the earth.

He did not have the courage to actually carry out his threat. When the trio saw that I was actually going to leave, they got worked up. Adrian suddenly yanked Doggo out of the RV, and he crashed on the grass. I cried out in surprise and lunged over to Doggo. Thank goodness he only fell on the grass. Even so, he started whining in pain. By the looks of it, his leg was broken. Fury burned in me. I grabbed one of the detachable screens and swung it at Adrian. Before I could get close, someone grabbed my waist tightly and whispered into my ear, “Calm down.”

With a bang, I disappeared out the window, while my spirit hovered in mid-air. I saw Charles dash forward, with half of his body hanging out of the window. "Nat!" His voice faded in the wind, and there was no response. Behind him, Samantha spoke softly. "Charles, calm down. That gunshot sounded off." Charles turned around at once, horror flickering in his gaze. It was an expression that I didn't quite recognize. He had always been so calm and reserved that he remained nonchalant even when he cheated on me.

He grabbed my neck. I felt helpless. I felt I could almost predict what was about to happen. Ethan’s words echoed in my mind. “Now, she’s alive but defiled.” Just as his hand reached my chest, the silence of the night was broken by screeching brakes. The car’s headlights blinded me. Lucas Grant jumped out of the car and shoved the drunk off me. Seeing Lucas’s face, my face turned even paler. His bodyguards rushed over and dragged the drunk away.

Aria ran off as soon as she confirmed that it was indeed Kian that she saw—her urge to go to the bathroom completely being forgotten. She ran along Adriel on the way, and she seemed to be having the same expression as Aria. The two of them didn’t even have to speak to know that something wasn’t right. “Let’s go?” Adriel said. Aria nodded her head and followed Adriel out of the club. The two of them went to Adriel’s car, and they started driving to a nearby drive-thru.

He had been unconscious in an abandoned factory, waking to gunshots.

Kieran made a sharp gesture, and the shadow domain instantly expanded, plunging the entire church into darkness. Everyone but me was frozen in the gloom. Even Lucian was held fast by countless shadows, unable to move. "Let him go!" I roared. Kieran teleported in front of me. Ignoring my struggles, he forcefully swept me up and rushed out of the church. A black helicopter hovered overhead. A few minutes later, I was deposited on the cabin sofa. The helicopter ascended rapidly, leaving Los Angeles behind. "Where are you taking me? Let me go!" I lunged for the cabin door.

The slap had turned my face to the side. My cheek burned so badly that even breathing hurt, but the quiet around me hurt more. Dozens of trainees stood in a half circle, watching me as if they were waiting to see whether I would cry, scream, or kneel and apologize. Orion Draven’s fingers curled slowly into his palm. For one second, something like regret crossed his face. Then Lilith Vane made a small, broken sound behind him. Orion looked back at her, and whatever guilt had appeared in his eyes disappeared.
