I like it.” I blinked at her. too stunned to respond. But then the smile fell off her face and she just looked at me for a moment like all of sudden something had occurred to her. “This is him, as in him, oh my god harper! A large counter with about thirty workers stood ready to serve us. As we neared the counter, Hazel looped her arm through mine, slowing me down while the triplets walked ahead. “Riley texted last night,” she whispered. Suddenly, all the hatred I harbored for the camp disappeared as I turned to her, eager to hear more. “Well, it was just small talk. He plays football, and look at this…” She pulled out her phone, showing me a shirtless picture of Riley. “I couldn’t stop picturing him in my sleep. He’s so hot.”

“You are stronger than you think, Lisa. Really. You’ve been through hell, and you are still standing. That guy is in a cage for the rest of his life. He is not even worth your tears.” I wiped my cheeks roughly, embarrassed. “I hate crying in front of people.” Riley gave me a small smile. “Then it’s a good thing I am not people. I am your friend.” That made me let out a shaky laugh, even though more tears slipped down. She smiled when she heard me laugh. “See? I am good at this,” Riley said, patting her shoulder like she deserved an award. “I always know how to cheer people up. Want me to tell you a bad joke?”

Just a quiet little sound, but it grated against me like nails on glass. She was smiling. Smiling. How the hell could she smile? The meeting rolled on, a blur of numbers and bullet points. I was supposed to give input. Approve something. I didn’t. I just sat there, every muscle locked tight, watching Riley pretend like everything was fine. Then she said something, a little line that tipped me over. She looked up from her notes and smiled directly at me. “Jax, you might want to get ready for the number of ladies that will be snarling at the press tomorrow.”
