His eyes had gone wild, the gold replaced by something darker, something hungry. Another snake struck at him from the left. He pivoted and caught it mid lunge, crushing its skull between his teeth. He ate that one too, faster than the first, as if he could not get enough. Then another. And another. The snakes swarmed him. Their bodies wrapped around his legs, his torso, his neck. But Aldric was stronger. He ripped and tore and swallowed, his movements becoming more brutal with each kill. By the time the last snake lay dead, his fur was soaked in blood and his stomach was distended.

The moist surface squished under the impact, a sound that turned my stomach. “Bloody snake?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. “Do you know where we are?” I searched the darkness for something—anything—that would give me an answer. The faint light of the worms revealed nothing but the same fleshy expanse I had seen before. Then, something caught my eye. Two worms had stopped crawling.
