Crack it wrong, you get venom in the eyes.
“Don’t touch,” I warn, mostly for Hadrian’s benefit. He lifts his hands as if I’ve accused him of a crime.
I pluck a length of coil wire from my pouch, thread it through the latch, and loop it around a root. “Everybody blink.” I yank.
The latch pops; the viper hisses its little last breathe and spits safely into moss. The smell of rot and sugar rides the air, acrid and smug.
“Rude,” I mutter, and lift the lid with my dagger, my body angled away. Inside are ration bricks wrapped in waxed cloth, two water bladders, a packet of painroot salve, six arrows tied with red thread, and a folded scrap of oiled paper.
