"Stand up, woman." He ordered in the chilliest demeanor as if he was close to murdering somebody. When Daeira did so, she eased up her aching knees and faced him as he stood up and trained her eyes towards the frozen figure of Heoshe, Hani, and Kimie. "These insignificant humans hit you and brought you to your knees?" he asked darkly. His eyes were almost a replica of hell when he regarded the unmoving stepmother and stepsisters of Daeira.

She reached out to grab my father’s arm. “Honey, I was wrong. It was him. He seduced me. I was confused for a moment…” “Confused?” My father flung her hand away so hard she slammed into the car door. “I think you were just horny and cheap!” He grabbed her by the hair and forced her to look at him. “You acted so pure back then, swore you’d behave and be my woman. Turns out it was all an act for me, huh? “The most poisonous thing is a woman’s heart!”

The rain in Seattle didn’t wash things clean; it just turned everything to a grey, suffocating slush. I stood at the edge of the open grave, my black silk dress clinging to my knees. The fabric was expensive—a gift from Julian for my twentieth birthday—but today it felt like a shroud. I watched the mahogany casket descend, carrying the only woman who was supposed to protect me. My mother. She was a beautiful disaster. A woman who loved gin more than she loved her own daughter, and who loved Julian Vane’s bank account most of all.

"You have the one thing I’ve wanted since I was a child. I want the rage. I want the obsession. I want him to look at me with that terrifying hunger instead of that pathetic adoration. I watched him through the hallway window earlier. I saw the way he dragged you into the shadows. He’s risking everything—the family business, his father’s wrath, his own reputation—just to get inside you. He’s playing with fire, and he’s doing it for you." She stands up, pacing the small room like a caged animal. "It’s forbidden. It’s disgusting. You’re his stepmother. But the danger just makes him harder, doesn't it? He’s so close to being caught every time he touches you, and he still does it. He still choos

"How dare you steal such a valuable piece of jewelry from my husband's late wife?! You ignorant thing! Aren't you afraid of paying the price with your life?!" I coughed up blood. "T-This was left behind by my mom! Don't touch it!" Brenda did not believe me. She admired the sapphire greedily while gloating, "If your family really possessed such an inheritance, why would you still climb into my husband's bed? You're even making up stories about your mother being dead. What a disgrace for her to have a daughter like you. Your mother must have been a shameless woman too!" "Don't you dare insult my mother!"

The confession slipped out, vulnerable and true. My quiet personality cracked open, enough to let him peek inside the storm I’d hidden for years. He stepped closer, towering over me, that commanding presence making my knees weak. “This is dangerous, princess. I’m your stepfather. Your mother…” “Mom’s not here,” I whispered, bold from the whiskey and the pressing desires he’d left me with since the sleepwalking night. I set my glass down and reached for his hand. “Dance with me? Just for a minute. The weather is too cold to ignore.”

2. I almost had a heart attack, hearing the woman's voice so close to me. But when she materialized out of the shadows, she merely placed a finger to her lips, signaling for quiet. Getting as low to the ground as I humanly could, I watched as she jogged past me, startling when another wolf emerged from the nearby chalets. As she stood blocking my presence with her body, the she-wolf ordered a shift, and shimmering under the moonlight; the wolf did as he was told. " Shamas, what has you out and about after dark? My father has a curfew for a reason?"

Having finally washed away all the road dirt and dust, she wiped herself off with one of the towels that lay on the shelf next to the shower stall. She glanced at the mirror in passing, her eyes again filled with dark gold. In moments of mental turmoil, the she-wolf manifested itself, and my eyes changed color. And now the she-wolf is curious, interesting.

A spell? “ Okay…’’ I tried to speak. “ What kind? And how is that possible? Who cast a spell on him?’’ “ your stepmother.’’ Now that was new. “What do you mean?’’ “ I mean that your step mother is a witch. Just like the woman in the dungeons. She is not only responsible for trying to be with my cousin and making him fall in love with your stepsister…’’
