I said, she nodded, still staring at me with surprised eyes. I walked outside my house, and jumped inside my car, I turned up the music, and started to hum along with the song. I was really trying my best to keep my mind away from Anthony, but he still there, even though he was thousands miles away, but he wouldn’t leave my mind.

Before he could finish, a car sped in from the side, closing the distance in an instant. Bang—!

He was quiet for a moment, a long moment, then he took in a big breath. "Proxima," he said. She went very still. He turned to look at her. "The star?" she said. "The name comes from proximity," he said. "From closeness. From the thing being real even if it's not yet arrived." He held her gaze. "Four light-years away. Still real." She thought about a twelve-year-old writing in a margin: the star itself might already be gone by the time we see the light. I don't understand how something can be real and already gone at the same time.

Close enough that it stopped feeling like business. Way too close.

Thomas put his finger up my nose, his body trembling. “We have been living here without an issue. Are you trying to put us out on the street?” “Yeah, Miles.” Teresa’s voice softened. Choking in sobs, Teresa tried to appeal to my emotions. “I know that we didn’t think this through or check with you. “But Cass needs some space now that she’s pregnant. We are a family. Can’t we put our differences aside and talk? Where will we go if you get rid of the apartment?” Here we went again.

I called Cassian that evening, pacing my apartment with bare feet against cool floorboards. “I need to say something without it turning into a plan,” I said the moment he answered. “Then say it,” he replied. “I miss the simplicity of being near you,” I admitted. “Not because distance is hurting us but because I can feel how different it would be.” Silence followed. Thick. Honest. “Thank you for telling me,” he said finally. “And for not turning that into pressure.” “I don’t want to,” I replied. “I don’t want closeness to become a demand.”

We just choose distance anyway because staying close feels unforgivable. I keep walking until I cannot feel my legs anymore. Until the ache is the only thing left. And even then, I still feel him. Still there. Still mine.

But something close. Something human.

But distance is not an option. Never again.
