Dear Pen pal, Hello. My name is Wesley. I am 12 years old, and I am in 6th grade at Crescent Lake Elementary in Northern California. I’ll be honest, I am only writing this letter because my teacher said we have to. She said if we don’t, we’ll get an F, and I am not about to fail an assignment and ruin my track record of perfect grades. Plus, my dad would probably ground me or something. Anyway, I don’t really want a pen pal. I have friends here at school already, so why would I need to make friends with somebody who doesn’t even live here, someone who I’ll never actually meet?

They were completely in the dark about the whole Adam, Dom, Levy, crazy psycho brother thing. But looking at the bright side, at least I shook Sonia off my hide. I guess Maddison wasn't that big of a bitch anymore I don’t let people push me over anymore. I just need to treat my anger management issues and avoid snapping at people. I do miss Penelope, Jake and Monic though. Penelope got accepted in a Uni in the neighboring town which is around an hour drive away; and as for Jake and Monic, they’ve been going on strong, still in high school.

No explanation. But I didn’t need one. I knew it was from him. And that tiny gesture undid me more than any apology could have. That night, I sat at my desk, staring at the blank page on my screen. My fingers hovered over the keys. The cursor blinked, waiting.

I suddenly started to feel nervous. "Hi Amarachi, I'm your literature teacher. My name is Miss Ada. Welcome to Crownstar highschool." I smiled at her. "So who doesn't have a seat partner? A girl raised her hands and Miss Ada asked me to seat with her. She started teaching and that was when I remembered that I didn't collect the pen my mum bought. I didn't want to ask anyone for a spare pen but then it was my first day at school and I did not want to start skipping notes. I asked the guy at my front for a spare pen but he didn't have any one. The girl beside him smiled and gave me a pen, I thanked her and started writing.

I spent hours on the phone to her, both avoiding the topic of Adam and babies, yet it was a natural, happy conversation between two sisters. On Thursday, the last day of my trip away before heading back home I rang Pen. I half expected her to be too busy with baby number four, but she answered. “Hey,” she answered in a drowsy tone, “what’s up?” “I’m just ringing to say hi, check in on you?” “You never do that, what’s the matter?” “I’m trying to be a better person okay, so tell me, how are you all?” “Kids are fine, Julien’s away until tomorrow.
