“That could get me in trouble.” Silence falls around us but we could both feel the tension in the air. Ethan starts driving, keeping a slow but steady pace as we retrace our earlier route. “It’s about time,” Ethan mutter but I hear it. I whip my head to his side, only to be surprised by the booming sound of a firecracker exploding in the distance. “…What?” Ethan slows the car and parks on the side of the road, giving us a clear view of the fireworks display.

So is the wine glass on the nightstand, half-full and left there because no one is going to complain about it. She is forty-five years old, and she is not unhappy. That is, she realizes, a catastrophic thing to be. The heart attack is fast, which she will later understand as mercy. There is no dramatic final thought, no parade of faces. There is only the crack in the ceiling and then the particular absence of everything — and then, with no transition she can account for, there is light. Fluorescent. Institutional. The kind that hums. "Serra." She blinks.

A new shower of shards rained down on me as the side window in the back exploded as well. “Fuck,” Nico snarled while he tried to get a connection with his phone, probably to call Damian. Fear was clogging my throat tightly. Fear for my own life was only a small part of it. Seeing Nico in clear line of fire terrified me even more because he couldn’t duck his head and one bullet could put an end to everything. We turned another corner and I slammed against the door. I squeezed my eyes shut, fighting my rising sickness. More shots rang out and Nico let out a hiss and I peered to the side.

Air surged outward, catching the flame and pushing it back. The fire didn’t die. It grew. Blaze’s eyes flickered. “Again,” he said quietly. I lifted my hand. Fire answered this time. Not just mine. His. The two flames met between us— And fused. The heat spiked instantly. Not doubling. Multiplying. The circle glowed brighter. White-orange. Blaze stepped forward. “So that’s new,” he said. “Very new.” I pushed more air into the mix. The fire surged higher. Blaze didn’t pull back.

"Daniella, when did you become so unreasonable?" I barely heard what he said. A sharp ringing filled my ears, my vision blurred, and my legs suddenly gave out. Instinctively, I reached for something to hold on to, but before I could, my body collapsed. "Daniella!" I heard Brandon's panicked voice. He seemed like he wanted to help me but stopped. Because right beside him, Lexie said, "Ms. Pace must be doing this just to stop me from moving in…" Meanwhile, Brandon actually believed her.

Humiliation burned my cheeks, but fear kept me silent. Blaze moved back to the table, selecting a pair of pliers this time, inspecting them like he was choosing a weapon for war. I clenched my fists. “You’re not going to hurt me.” I tried to put on a brave face but my voice was trembling. Blaze arched a brow. “Oh?” I forced myself to nod. “You’re not a killer.” Blaze hummed, dragging the chair back in front of me and sitting down again. “That’s where you’re wrong, Summer.” He smirked, leaning closer. “I just don’t kill people the way you expect.”

“You look like someone just told you adulthood costs extra.” I huffed a laugh. “Thesis moved forward,” I admitted quietly. He winced. “Ouch.” “Yeah.” He just graduated from art school too but he majored in sculpting, he knew exactly how I was feeling. He whistled low. “That’s savage.” “Apparently he or she is… intense.” “Intense how?” “Withdraws mid-session if he’s bored.” Marcus blinked in shock. “That’s villain behavior.” I forced a smile. “Exactly.”

June took in a deep breath and slide his room door open, to his surprise he saw Apollo and Levi standing there, glaring at eachother. "How long have you two been here?" June asked. Levi broke the eye contact first to smile at June. June saw a small victorious smile flash on Apollo's face before he too faced him. "Master, I came to get your blessings for today's performance," Levi gushed. True he accepted the fact that, June will not love him back. But it was hard for Levi to move on. "Oh, wait I have something for you!" June said, slapping his forehead. He reached for his inner pocket and pulled out a sliver bracelet, with a small citrine craved into it.

I was an employee at a secretive research lab located overseas, and I accidentally discovered an impending apocalypse known as the pyro-calypse, so I resigned from my job immediately. But before I left, I signed an NDA with the research lab that stated I must never leak any details about the apocalypse to other people to prevent mass panic on a global scale. After getting off the plane, I went home with my luggage in town. I hoped to convince my mom, Dorothy Locke, and my younger brother, Nicholas Kennedy, to head to the mountains, where we could stock up on supplies and tough out the apocalypse there.

She lifted something into the air with both hands. Brea sucked in a huge breath when she finally realized that Victoria held a baby high into the air, a bright blue blanket swathed the boy as he began to cry. The whole beautiful setting turned from a sparkling scene to a black ash color before her very eyes. Everything blurred and the once bright colors ran together, like a Rockwell painting gone wrong. She could hear a loud roaring, it sounded like that time when a tornado passed close to where she lived in town last year. Her body shook as her stomach heaved. This can’t be real! She leaned her head back and screamed, “NOOOO!”
