She and Eric began unstrapping the other kids, speaking to them in soft, firm voices. “You’re safe now. We’re getting you out. Stay with me. Breathe.” A boy, no older than fifteen, gripped Sonia’s wrist, his eyes wide with terror. “Is this real?” he whispered. Sonia cupped his face, her thumb brushing the grime from his cheek. “Yes,” she said, her voice breaking. “It’s real. You’re going home.”
