in the RPG, spellcasters had to make certain Components necessary to use magic. The components are Verbal, Somatic and Material. A verbal component is a spoken word. Which means that to provide a verbal component, you must be able to speak in a strong voice. A silence spell or a gag prevents speech, thus nullifying the ability to cast magic. A somatic component is a measured and precise movement of the hand. To provide a somatic component, you must have at least one free hand, although certain especially creative (and cheat) players may argue that they can fulfill that component with another part of the body.
