Instead of me unimpressing Spencer's grammy, I'm the one being unimpressed by everyone in his family. An odd sense of sympathy starts to work for Spencer. My mind tries to convince me that his family situation shares familiarity with mine. I sure hope not that's the case. “Ah, right. It was great seeing you, grammy. Take care of yourself.” Spencer sounds as if he were on autopilot.

I step to one corner, finding an empty couch to sit on while I watch his guests leave one by one. Lauren suddenly tosses herself by my side, the couch’s cushion sinking slightly with her weight. Poppy sits on my other side, and I can feel her eyes on my face, but I don’t look at her, choosing to keep my focus ahead, watching as Spencer talks to one of the singers he used to work with back in LA. I don’t remember his name, but I remember seeing his face once or twice on my TV back home, when Mom and Dad were watching some show on a Sunday night. I guess he’s a country singer, but I honestly can’t remember.

They waited for him for half an hour, then they left. In the meantime, at the venue, the Spencer family was with the Bennet family. It’s for the best for you and your family.” My jaw dropped. “What?”

“Of course, you will do that. Just like my mom did for me. I think being good with kids and be a genuine person is genetic. And you have the right genes for the job.” Katie and I sit on the floor hugging tight for a moment. “Does he want me to join him where he is?” I ask. “Yeah, they went to the clinic,” Katie helps me up. We find the room and I see Spencer and his daughter with her mother. They look like a family. “Spence?” I say and Spencer faces me. He looks pale and he is trembling slightly. “Katie told me. Can I meet her?” He swallows before walking over to me.
