He hadn’t been able to read all that well in his human days, but he could still recognize the word vampire.

Page five is the bomb construction timeline, technical enough that Sage makes a sound when she reads it and starts typing something on her laptop without explanation. I hand each page to Dante as I finish it and work through six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, and then I pick up page twelve and I read it and I read it again and I put it face down on the table. Dante looks at the page face down on the table and then at me. "Kira," he says. "Keep reading," I say, and I gesture at the pages he still has in his hand.

Opening it silently, I strained for signs of anyone else in the hotel who might recognize me or who I may know. Throwing caution to the wind, I stole down the hall, my feet lightly pattering on the marble floor as I hurried down to the bookshop. I looked around and found one I thought was fitting for the occasion: Lady Chatterley's Lover based on the title because I felt I could relate with her but half not trusting myself not to give in to the lust-filled pages and half gleeful with excitement, I chose the book and headed back to my suite. Shutting myself in the bedroom, I curled up on the oversized chair again and got lost in its pages.

The book was about different herbs and spices that could be used to create soups. Bringing the book over to the desk, I opened the cabinet and began sniffing the contents to identify each one. I wrote them all down on a piece of paper numbered the way I placed them back into the cabinet. I bit of pride bloomed in my chest and Scarlett chuckled, “that was all me, don’t be so proud of yourself.”
