June yelled. Dante jumped on the spider’s back, ripped the glass off its center, and tore out the burning coal. He hurled it at the wall. The spider shut down and crashed. Marcus and Raven took out the other two spiders, smashing their legs with metal pipes. When they finished, they stood breathing hard, faces smeared with black dust. The giant vault door started to spin, groaning open. Inside, the room looked part library, part science lab—thousands of books lined the walls, but the books were made of gold sheets.

He lifts me off my feet, carrying me like a sack of flour. "Put me down!" I gasp, thrashing. "Shut up, ghost!" He kicks the pantry door open. It’s not a pantry. Behind the shelves of pasta and olive oil, a steel panel slides back. A panic room. He throws me inside. I hit the floor hard. My hip screams. Spadino jumps in after me and hits a red button on the wall. Clang. The steel door seals shut. The sound of gunfire cuts off instantly, replaced by the heavy, pressurized silence of the panic room.

I thought to myself. “Yup that's Spiderman drapes alright, and rug, and duvet, and...” Mina began to list all the Spiderman objects in the room. “Alright Mina I get it, we are in a young boys room, but the question is, who's room is it? And how the hell did we get here? Oh and not to mention where the hell is Mason?” I snapped at my wolf in a panic. I looked down at myself and pulled the blanket away from my body and then let out a sigh of relief. Thankfully I wasn't naked.

She paused, turning to look at me, her green eyes void of the fear I could smell on her skin. "Yes," she asked, arching her brow. She was good at masking her emotions; I would give her that much. She grabbed it, our fingers lightly brushing before quickly pulling her hand away again, stuffing the card in her jacket pocket, not even glancing at it. "I'm only here for a couple of days; if I get a chance, I will. Again, it was nice meeting you." Lilith said, forcing a smile before turning and walking further into town.

"Welcome home, Jinyan. The prototype is waiting." The doors slid open with a sound of grinding stone. The room beyond was a perfect, horrific recreation of our bedroom in the Spire—but everything was made of the Adriatic’s industrial scrap. Eve The War Room isn't a smoky backroom filled with men playing poker. It looks like the flight deck of a spaceship crashed into an industrial loft.
