In each spider’s belly, a burning coal glowed like a tiny, furious sun. “Back up!” Raven shouted. She flung her knife, but the spider smacked it away with a metal leg. One spider lunged at June and Leo. A little of June’s old fire sparked inside her. Not much, but enough. She didn’t throw a fireball—she just grabbed the spider’s copper leg as it landed. She pushed all her cold, empty feeling into the machine. The leg froze solid. The spider tipped over, its orange core flickering. “Dante! Break the core!” June yelled.

When I hummed the Spiderman theme tune, I looked at at King from underneath my eyelashes. He raised an unimpressed eyebrow. “Really?” I grinned, finger walking up his side. “Dude, these webs are in honor of you.” “How thoughtful,” King gritted out, batting away my hand. Maybe it had to do with the soul. I had to do something. I kept having to push off the tiny black spiders that had long fangs that magically appeared when they needed to attack.
