I was going to end it. The clearing was full of wolves and horses. The air smelled of excitement and the metallic tang of weapons. Kael was at the center of it all, sitting atop his massive black stallion, Storm. Storm was a beast of a horse, a legendary creature that Kael prized above everything else. He looked like a king, his eyes scanning the crowd with a restless energy. When I stepped into the light, the whispers died instantly. Seraphina was standing next to Kael’s horse, her hand on his thigh. When she saw me, her face went the color of curdled milk. She stared at me, her eyes darting to the green silk that should have been melting my skin.

“If you can't do this, then it's perfectly okay to step down from the competition. I will love you either way.” “Nah, trust me, babe. What's a horse ride I can't do?” He took deep breaths, eyes forward as they raised the flag. The three men sprinted right forward, and for a few minutes, it looked like he was actually getting used to it. The stallion he rode looked like it understood that Easton wasn't much of a rider, until everything turned sour.

I promised my wolf I would make it up to him. Saddling up my horse, a black stallion called Demon, I gave him free reign. Feeling the wind in my face, the scent of horse and earth in my nostrils was almost as freeing as letting my wolf free. Which I couldn’t precisely do with everyone around me. This was the next best thing. Demon was a beautiful beast, wild and spirited, not bending to anyone’s will but mine. He was all mine, like Darina will be soon.

"Understood, Warlord." Feeling a deep wave of embarrassment wash over my system, I force my inner wolf to reclaim its royal composure. My fingers smooth down the stray strands of my dark hair, acting as if my technical failure had never occurred before I tilt my chin up to command Tobin to accelerate our pace toward the medical lifts.

He lights the magic flame and let it sparkle between his fingers. The bright blue light leads him in the right direction, as he turns over every stone and reads every inscription. He uses his sword to carves his way through dried seaweed and old bottom sludge that fills his nostrils with the stank of rotten eggs. Laurin knows that the longer he spends in the horse's brain, the harder it will be for him to find his way out of his consciousness. And he must not get lost, or he risks being trapped in there forever.
