Nico stopped at the first real drop—a twenty-foot sheer face, then a narrow traverse along a crumbling ledge, then another drop. He knew climbing. High school rock club. Solid upper body strength. Calluses still thick on his palms from years of gripping holds, pulling himself up walls when the world felt too heavy to carry. Climbing had been second nature once—focus, breath, grip, move. She chose a large trunk, that hadn’t suffered too badly, to begin her staircase, and placed a side table on top. Then she put a couple of chairs on top of that.
