Elias pulled his hand away fast, leaving me aching and empty. I yanked my sweater down and pressed my back harder against the shelf, trying to steady my breathing. My heart hammered like it wanted out of my chest. “Stay right there, Lila,” he whispered. His voice was low, tense. I heard him move carefully through the dark, footsteps quiet on the tile. Another crash echoed from somewhere deeper in the stacks. Like something knocking over a small pile of books. I held my breath. Elias stopped moving.

NESSA My hand froze in the air as the spoon in my hand fell to the ground. I gulped nervously as I leaned down to pick it and then acted as if nothing had happened. “I don't understand what you mean.” I whispered, taking my mom's plate to the sink while taking in deep breaths to calm my nerves. “You don't know what I'm talking about?” He questioned and I jolted when I noticed he was already behind me. I was trapped with nowhere to run.

The lighting was perfect, the glow of candlelight along with the soft lighting of old electric Edison bulbs (which Josephine was pretty sure were banned under EU regulations) projected an eerie atmosphere that conjured up images of bygone times. "It's actually a book about grim reapers..." My heart wavers fearfully once I hear that name, but I try not to panic. "It's just a story, don't be scared," I assure myself as I gulp down nothing nervously.

"And it's full of stories about fireflies, their habits, their life cycle, and even some myths and legends about them."
