They were off-the-books trackers. Hardened, scarred killers specifically kept for black-ops extraction missions. They carried heavy assault rifles loaded with specialized silver rounds. Ronan stopped at the back of the SUV. He popped the trunk, pulling out a heavy metal lockbox. He keyed in a code, snapping it open to reveal several heavy-duty silver chains and specialized wolf-bane injection darts.

It snapped at her face, its breath smelling of copper and chemical preservatives. She spun to the left, her silver movements fluid and weightless. She allowed the wolf’s momentum to carry it past her, but as it did, she drove her silver blade upward, targeting the unarmored gap beneath its foreleg. The silver energy coating the blade sliced through the tough hide effortlessly. The moment the silver entered the creature’s bloodstream, the violet light in its eyes vanished, replaced by a flash of blinding white light as the internal cybernetics short-circuited. The wolf crashed into the central console, sparking violently before collapsing.

The underling caught wind of them and attempted to throw them off by taking to the alleys, but Gil arrived to cut off the path. Victor dove in on him from behind, aiming for the shoulder with a shallow bite.

The savage wind howled once more, tearing across the ice that pinned down her body. It slipped between the wolves’ fur like a thousand frozen needles, making even the strongest of them tremble.
