I nodded, watching the rain streak sideways across the window, and settled into a silence that felt, for once, less like tension and more like simple exhaustion shared between two people who’d both had a difficult day.
We hadn’t gone far before the car lurched hard, the engine coughing once before settling into a rough, uneven idle that clearly wasn’t going to improve on its own. The driver climbed out to investigate, rain immediately soaking through his coat, and returned a few minutes later with the grim news that we’d need to wait for a second vehicle, the current one having stalled out entirely on the flooded road.
