But at least someone was on my side other than the tired wolf inside my head. She stepped away and forged through the huddles of spectators. I stood alone, then. My fingers curled until my nails bit into my palms. A few slinking gazes oiled over me, leaving a slimy feeling behind, and I caught one soft titter urging “He’s alone, girl, go. Shoot your shot.” I had to get out of here.

“I want to be alone. Get away from me.” My voice cracked, breaking into an ugly sob. “I want to be alone… please… leave me alone… leave me… alone.”

And not just the kind of party where you’re scrolling through your phone in bed with your legs tangled in a blanket and crumbs from a chocolate bar stuck to your collarbone. No. This is a full-blown, stand-on-the-coffee-table, blast-the-record-player party. Sober. Alone.

And sometimes I wonder why the old man up there even bothered bringing us all here. I face my mirror steely and I see something no one else sees–normal, tired. Everyone else has always seen me as that girl next door. The boys think I’m hot enough to want to gobble up in one piece, so all my life, all of them have always tried to get in my pants.

I stood there, watching him go, feeling the cold of the forest seep into my bones. This wasn’t over. Not by a long shot. But I’d made my stand. And I’d be ready for whatever came next.

Altinna will have no future beyond me, and that is not a weight I am willing to bear. Behind me, my Four wait in silence, ready to protect or attack, or silently stand in support as I do what must be done. Each of them is a piece of me. Each loves me with a burning desire that we have not yet quenched. If this is to be my last stand, I’m grateful to have them with me, ready to die or to conquer. We don’t know which yet.

That's why at the end of the day, all I just have to count on is me, myself, and I. Yes, just me alone.
