"Wait. Whatever you want, I can give it to you. Money, anything. I'm taking both of them with me." Ethan steadied himself and regained his composure as he locked his sharp eyes onto Amber. Anyone else might have been intimidated, but Amber was not one to scare easily. She did not even lift her gaze before waving her hand. Tara panicked as her tears spilled uncontrollably while Ethan's eyes stayed on her, filled with nothing but heartache and tenderness. At that moment, I probably looked like the greatest villain of all. It was as if I was someone who had torn apart the fated love story of two star-crossed lovers.

But I just could not help it any longer, being face to face with a wolf had everything flooding into my brain, and I wanted to scream my lungs out. Blood. It was blood that I saw. My parents' blood, spilled on the wooden floor around their heads. I saw their lifeless eyes and still bodies, and wounded faces. I saw my eleven year old self crying and screaming for them to wake up and look at me again, to call me their baby again. But that did not happen, it never happened. And I saw the people that had done that to them, their smug faces and crooked smirks, their hands stained with the blood of my parents, and the set of tattoos on one of their forearms.

Standing on the battlements were the Fourteen Blood-Lords. They didn't look like wolves. Richard hesitates, his fist still raised, and I can see the internal battle playing out on his face. That's when Garrett starts laughing, blood pouring from his mouth. The words hit me like a physical blow and before I can think, or stop myself, I'm storming forward and shoving Richard out of the way. The alpha is shoved to the side, and he glares at me, but I ignore him, snarlinng at the wolf beneath me.

None seemed right. "As my what, exactly?" His voice held an edge I couldn't quite interpret. "As an extension of you," I settled on. "As Blood Moon's secret weapon." He stood, approaching slowly. "Is that how you see yourself? A weapon?" "Isn't that what I am? What this blood makes me?" I gestured to the fading silver lines beneath my skin. "Logan wants it for a reason." "Logan wants it because he doesn't understand what it really is." He stopped just short of touching me. "The blood, the bond—they're not weapons, Stella. They're connections. To the past, to each other, to something larger than ourselves."

The little bit of money I had scraped together, paid for with endless nights and cracked, bleeding hands, meant less to them than one of my brother's hobbies. Brian sat nearby, playing video games.
