The Star-Fang Dagger skittered away, sliding across the smooth obsidian surface. "Get off me, you animal!" Morana shrieked, her voice no longer melodic but shrill and grating. She clawed at my face, her nails raking my skin. I didn't feel it. I didn't feel anything but the burning need to get to that altar. I grabbed her by the throat, hauling her up, slamming her back against the bone-pillar. "You touch him, and I will tear you apart with my bare hands!" The words were growled, guttural, inhuman.

I watch his eyes go wide, but his scream is cut off as I open my mouth and send a blast of fire into the crater. I hear the sounds of elves’ screams a moment before I begin to smell their burning flesh. I feel Cal come up behind me, blasting his air against the elves who escaped the crater. One by one, they begin falling into the boiling water as he uses his air to hold them. “Go, Daichi! Get Amaya to Doc Everett,” Avani tells him. I feel my mother and Kaylani fly up beside me, replacing Amaya’s water and my fire when the last of my air leaves my lungs.

Marcus screamed. Not the controlled grunt of a soldier absorbing pain. A scream. Raw, animal, involuntary. The conceptual friction ripping through his density field spiked from three hundred seventy terawatts to nine hundred in less than a second. The cables connecting him to Katherine's amplifier turned cherry-red. Two snapped simultaneously, whipping across the egg chamber like electric eels, gouging crystallized trenches in the floor.

She smiled, feeling the heat of the fire that was beginning to burn within her. And with that, the Starfire was kindled. ---

The sound cracked against the room like a plate breaking. The push knocked Star down hard. His elbow hit the floor first, then his hip. The sharp crack of the fall rang through the room. For a moment, the whole house went still. Then…. “AHHH!” Star screamed. Once. Twice. Three times. Each scream was louder than the one before, shaking the walls and rattling the windows. The sound was so deep, so wild, it didn’t sound human anymore. It swallowed every other noise…the ticking clock, the lamp’s low buzz, even Chris’s heavy breathing.

But beneath the apocalyptic fireworks, three hundred silver shooting stars pierced the atmosphere. The Star-Forged Lycans hit the permafrost. Their kinetic dampeners whined as they absorbed the terminal velocity of a sub-orbital drop, leaving deep, smoking craters in the ice. They rose one by one, their armor scorched but intact, howling their survival to the burning sky. Scarlett stood at the edge of the Bio-Dome’s protective shield, her heart hammering against her ribs so hard it ached. Her amber eyes frantically scanned the falling debris. The Stellar Navigator was a fried hunk of metal in her pocket, and her spiritual reserves were completely drained.

She lets out a vicious hiss that reminds me of the deranged stray cats that lurk in the streets on Earth. “The scourage!!” She hisses again as she releases the Kindred, as if touching him suddenly burns her. She performs a backflip, landing in a crouching position with one arm extended behind her head, high in the air. “Traitor!!” She growls, her eyes turning pitch black with rage. “TRAAAIITTTOOORRRR!!!” She screams again in a high pitch shrill that has everyone in the eatery hall cowering with their hands over their ears.

Too tired. She stepped beside me. No. Not stepped. Floated. “Elara, don’t—” “I have to,” she murmured. “Elara, I’m begging you—please, don’t use it. You’re still you.” Her eyes flicked to mine. “Then remember me this way.” She threw out her arms and screamed. Power erupted from her body like a supernova. Blinding. Violent. It knocked me off my feet, sent wolves flying, even knocked Dorian back several paces. Her scream turned into a roar—one that echoed through the trees, across the broken battlefield, into the stars above.

Grief. Bone chilling, stomach turning, blood curdling grief. That’s all Seraphina could feel. She collapsed and let out a wail that sounded almost demonic. She clawed at her naked skin and screamed into the night. Her screeches loud enough to disturb the heavens. Raging fires encircled her like a protective wall.

I looked up at her captivated by her strangeness. "Who are you?" My voice sounded odd to my own ears. "I'm someone who see's great potential in you Noah." I stayed silent because that doesn't answer my fucking question. She giggled down at me as if my lack of response was amusing to her. "I must admit I never pegged you for the strong silent type." She flashed her teeth just enough to expose her extended canines. We had heard whispers of vampires over the years but none of us had ever actually seen one...until now.
