Chapter 70 The Black Star The light carried Kazan and Mira out of the court and into a cavern beneath the mountain. The walls pulsed as if the stone had a heartbeat. Chains thicker than tree trunks stretched across the cavern, disappearing into a darkness so deep that their ends could not be seen. At the center floated a black star. It was not a star in the sky. It was a sphere of darkness surrounded by shards of silver light. Every few seconds it pulsed, and with each pulse the chains tightened.

Each star (woman) shimmered with celestial energy, halos of stars orbiting their heads. They spoke in perfect unison, their voices layered and powerful. “We are here to serve. Know that the stars are your ally. Your confidant and your guide. Why has the Mother of Shadows requested our presence.” They bowed before her, their lights brightening in reverence. Laura’s mouth opened her heart pounding as she was about to ask— “Laura!”

I was pinned down but, I would fight with everything in me. I reached out to Rudolph through my mind and gave a mental image of everything. I knew now why I felt so connected to him. Light and shadow collided with a deafening crack that rippled across the marsh. The ground trembled beneath Lyra’s feet. Fog split apart like torn fabric as Astraen launched himself at the Shadehunter, his body erupting in starlit brilliance. The Shadehunter shrieked—an awful, scraping sound that made Lyra’s bones vibrate. Its cloak of shadows whipped outward, twisting into tendrils that lashed at Astraen with blinding speed. Every strike that landed dimmed Astraen’s glow slightly.

The solitary star above flickered, its cold light sharper now, casting shadows that moved without source, whispering their names with a familiarity that chilled their blood. Rowan stood at the circle’s edge, his blade drawn, its silver light cutting through the gathering shadows.
