She had lost an alarming amount of weight because of her illness. "I'll protect you this time, Mom," I murmured as I held her hand. "I was the girl you met that night by the river. I am your mate!" He shakes his head. "Roxy already told me about that night. How she pulled me from the water, how we talked about our dreams." The office was almost completely empty now, and my reflection on the tall glass windows looked tired, but determined. I thought back to that night eight years ago. I thought back to the hotel room, to Maverick's large body sleeping peacefully on the bed, and then to his Rolex wrist watch glinting even under the dim light. I would never forget how fast my heart had been pounding in my chest when I slipped the watch into my pocket and ran out barefoot, not daring to look back. I honestly didn't mean to steal it, not really. But I needed the money for my sick mother, and selling that wrist watch had saved her life.

The Trap Closes AVA'S POV The highway roared beneath the tires. Dominic kept the accelerator down. The van ahead swerved violently across the road, trying to shake them, but it was obvious now— They weren’t trying very hard to escape. Ten million dollars to be exact.” Fuck. Sartorre’s men had caught up with us. I had thought we had been so careful and left no traces. The man didn’t see him coming until it was too late. “Looking for something?” Adrian’s voice was calm but edged with lethal intent. The man jumped, fumbling with the briefcase. His eyes went wide as he realized who was behind him. “Cole…” he breathed, the name dripping with fear. “Did you really think you could disappear?” Adrian asked, stepping closer. Each word was measured, filled with the promise of consequences. “I….I can explain,” the man stammered. “You already have,” Adrian said. “By stealing from the wrong people. By thinking the cartel would forget.”
