Coach is going to eat me up for breakfast and spit me right out if I dare to show up late and play like a fool. I remain on the bed, rolling my eyes at every moan, until I can’t take it anymore. I throw the covers off, swing my legs out of the bed and stand in nothing but my black boxer briefs. The bare floor sends chills up my feet as I stalk down the short hallway, the epitome of shamelessness following me every step of the way. The neighbors are probably getting a free audio book version of my roommate’s nighttime activities.

I asked eagerly. “Focus your energy,” Steve instructed. “Your mind, your soul… let them flow into the book. Keep your eyes fixed, and the words will appear one by one.” I obeyed immediately. Five minutes passed in silence. Nothing. Doubt whispered in my mind, but I refused to surrender. Then, slowly, words began to shimmer onto the blank pages. My pulse quickened as I absorbed the instructions.

“Follow me.” Rae stands up and so does Nathan and both follow me as I head towards the library. When we enter the library I tell Rae “Wait here for a moment.” and make my way up one of the staircases searching a nearby shelf. My fingers run across the spines of books until I found it. Pulling out the book I make my way down to Rae handing it to her.

He tries to put on a smiling face. I walked carefully out of the room so that the books I was holding wouldn't fall. Because of the books that were blocking my eyes, I could barely see where I was walking. Why did I believe what Mr. Sullivan. Not much? I stopped for a moment, stretched my neck out, and peeked down to see the stairs. As I stood in front of the stairs, a sigh came out of me. With every step-down, I couldn't help but shiver. Just one wrong step: all the books I hold will fall as well as me. I heard someone climb the stairs, and I stepped aside. Once I heard it was gone, I went on.

Somewhere, mice squealed and skittered into hiding places. The smell of moldy wood, droppings, dust, and dead things mingled with something far more pleasant: paper. Books. I crouched down and threaded my fingers together so I could give Steph a leg up. I didn’t need to say a word for her to step on them. With a grunt, I hoisted her high enough that she could heave herself into wherever this led. She winced with a hiss, but reassured me with a whisper. “I’m okay. Just—oh, my Goddess.”

Stepping into the vast expanse, I was greeted by the scent of old books and the hushed whispers of fellow seekers of wisdom. The library was a labyrinth of shelves, each filled with countless tales waiting to be devoured. I navigated through the maze, my fingers gently grazing the spines of books, as if seeking a connection with the stories within. The soft glow of reading lamps cast a warm ambiance, creating pockets of tranquillity amidst the bustling world outside.

I frowned as I drew closer, curious. “What are these?” I asked, lowering myself onto the floor beside the table. “This is step one,” he said simply, dropping into the armchair across from me. “If you’re serious about learning human language, we will start from the foundation. Children’s books.” I stared at the stack of books, bright covers with smiling cartoon animals stared back at me. It almost felt insulting to me, an adult, expected to sit like a child and sound out human words. It's fine I'm used to enduring humiliation at the hands of my pack.

Then she goes to school. The second book finds its readers more slowly than the first. The first book found people who were already doing the work and gave them the language for it. The second book finds people who are at the beginning — who are deciding whether to commit to the kind of practice the first book describes, and who need to understand what that commitment requires and what it produces.

I looked down at my palms for a while then turned my attention to my dad, completely ignoring papa. “Now you know the reason why we left. Could Ryder keep on working for us?” A nod was all I needed to ask Ryder help me go to my room. Author: Boys, we reached chapter 17th. Aren't you excited?
