“She didn’t stop me, when she noticed the pattern. She just stopped paying the fees. Grade three was my last day of school.”
Eliana blinked, trying to picture the child he once was, a boy with no direction, left to himself. “I’m so sorry,” she said.
He didn’t respond right away. His gaze seemed distant again.
“Everything turned worse when she started stealing from her clients,” he continued. “Money, jewelry, whatever she could find while they were distracted.”
He stopped talking for a while again. Then continued, “then one of them came one night, just before dinner. We were about to eat rice, she’d actually cooked rice that night.”
