Golden magic poured from his shoulders, but the silver veins in the road struck back, snapping at him like lightning through water. Still, he stood. Beautiful. Furious. He reached into his robes and pulled out a small, dark crystal. It was the same obsidian as the dagger, and it seemed to suck the light from the air around it. "A null-stone," he spat. "A shard of the eternal eclipse. Your light ends here, vessel!" He hurled it at me. I felt it before it hit. A wave of nullification, an utter void of energy. The beam of moonlight wavered. The power inside me stuttered, like a heart skipping a beat. The null-stone flew true, aimed directly for my chest.

The demon woman fell immediately and the wind ceased. Sophie was breathing heavily. She looked at the ground but she couldn't find her. She turned back at the others.

Partheos howled as the limb exploded. “So you’re the one…” Partheos snarled. “The Smiter… a boy?” Scott gritted his teeth. “Yeah—and I’m the one who’s sending your ugly ass back to Hell!” Partheos launched again in a tidal wave of sand. Scott raised the sword, forming a shield of holy flame. The demon’s blast hit it—and turned to glass on impact. A beam of white light surged outward, consuming Partheos. He froze mid-roar, transformed into a glass statue.

But the others had already entered. Rea instinctively grabbed a long, jagged shard of stone from the ground. She didn't think. One of them—the skeletal one—lunged at her. It tried to grab her by the shoulder, but she twisted, ramming the rock into its ribs with all her strength. The stone cracked, but so did the demon, retreating with a rasping groan. Meanwhile, Kael fought two more. The armored demon attacked with a heavy double-edged weapon, while another tried to paralyze him from behind. Kael kicked one away, defending with his sword crossed, but a strike landed—a blade bit into his shoulder, and blood sprayed.
