The buzzing stops. Peace. Two seconds later—GRNNNNG! I flinch. The vibration jolts through the penthouse again. I could turn it off. I should turn it off. But my arms feel heavy, my bones jelly, and the idea of moving seems like a betrayal to my own body. So I ignore it and close my eyes again. But then—another sound. At first it’s faint, like soft murmurs. Then louder. Closer. A low rumble of voices mixed with frantic shuffling.

I am not going to take a look. But as I keep walking, I keep hearing the sound. stop walking and listen more carefully. The sound is coming from behind some bushes near the bushy part of the square. It's definitely crying. Soft, quiet sobs that someone is someone is trying to make loud, but obviously does not have the ability to because they are weak

The pounding wouldn't stop, so Cyrus silenced it with a command. He activated the room's sound-dampening system, cutting off the hallway chatter and the relentless hammering. No one would use noise to rattle him. Twenty minutes later, the sounds faded. The building's owners stood staring at the metal wall, their faces drawn and empty. The air around them felt colder than the storm outside. "How can this be? Who builds a house like this?" someone cried, clutching his face.

I pressed harder, palms flat against my ears, and the whispers kept coming and I started hitting the sides of my head, trying to knock them loose, trying to find some way to silence what wasn't going to be silenced by anything physical.

Cold air escaped through it. Different from the mansion above. Heavier. Drier. Like air that hadn’t moved in a long time. My skin reacted instantly. Silas shifted his stance slightly. Protective. Controlled. Alert. The seam widened further. Then stopped. Silence returned for half a second. Then something spoke. Not a voice. A sound shaped like pressure. Low. Fragmented. Almost human. But not fully. My breath caught sharply. The sound repeated. Closer this time. Silas’s voice dropped.

I cut the call and rub the back of my neck. “Shut up. What’s that sound?” Ghost whispers. “What sound?” I listen more carefully. Out of the corner of my eye, I see Swagga backing up and his fur bristles. His low growl floats through the air, making everyone look more uncomfortable. The sound of ice cubes clinks in the distance. It turns into ice crackling, then escalates to the higher pitch of glass breaking into spiderwebs. “EVERYONE GET BACK!”

Was someone shouting through the noise? No. It wasn’t outside. It was inside me. I clutched my head, fingers clawing into my scalp, palms pressing hard against my ears, like I could smother the voice with skin and bone. “Stop… stop… stop.” And then— Silence. Not just quiet, but the heavy, sudden kind that slams down like a curtain on a stage. No pounding fists on the bathroom door. No fake-concerned voices trying to coax me out. No rustling shoes or murmured gossip from the hallway.

Whatever the reason, there was no turning back now. Suddenly, a sound shattered the silence—a haunting laughter that sent shivers down my spine. It was an unhinged laugh, filled with amusement and a touch of madness. The mere sound of it sent chills coursing through my veins, freezing me in place. The laughter seemed to echo through the room, lingering in the air like a sinister specter.

I turn my eyes to my front as we hear a loud footsteps coming from the other side, making its way here in our direction. "Stay still, okay?" I said. It didn't take a while before a sound of hiccup came out of his mouth. I immediately turn my eyes to him as he attempts to firmly cover his mouth. "Seriously?" I mouthed. He shakes his head and gestured me to help him. And I shake mine back, too, not knowing what I can do. We're in the middle of hiding from someone and sounds of hiccups is the last thing we'd want to be caught for.

It was mesmerizing. He lifted his foot to step in the direction the air was flowing to, but suddenly stopped. He looked at the man. The man was staring intently, unmoving. The strange humming sound was growing louder. He raised his other leg and placed it in the direction where the sound was coming from. As soon as he placed his foot in the air, the humming suddenly faded, and was replaced with a deafening roar of noise. It was almost overwhelming and caused the hair on his arms to stand on ends.
