“Slow. Isolate the audio. Don’t enhance more than necessary. We need truth, not artifacts.” Jonah nodded, thumbed the trackpad, and the room sank into a delicate tension. The clip that had been frozen on the screen now unfurled in more detail on the laptop. It was brief, a blink of footage and then a whisper. Jonah ran noise reduction, three passes, then another, and everyone crowded forward, cups forgotten, as if leaning could make the sound clearer.

My fingers trembled as I gripped the wall behind me, nails scraping for something to ground me. Move. Do something. Say something. My chest caved under the weight of it all. I couldn’t take it anymore. “S-stop!” I choked out, barely recognizing my own voice. I can hear something beeping and it annoys me. I hear voices talking in hushed tones, then a man's voice raised in anger. I hear sneakers squeaking on the floor. I pressed my hands to my ears, trying to block it out, but it only grew louder. Then came the screech—a high-pitched, grating sound, like claws raking across stone. It was so sharp, so piercing, that it made my head throb. I squeezed my eyes shut, tears streaming down my face as I tried to drown out the noise. The sound was unbearable, scraping at my mind, driving me to the brink of madness. And then, as suddenly as it started, it stopped.

The kind of sound that claws at the edges of sanity. Doctor Han stood in the hallway, his hands shaking. He slowly pounded his head against the wall, once, then again, harder each time, as if he could knock the sound out of his ears. But it wouldn’t leave him.
