The vines had crept up the sides of the house and had wrapped around it like veins and in the light of a perfect moon like the one which hovered above the city this percular night, it seemed to pulse. Stories had been made up and passed down from parents to children, stories of the last owners of the house having been in cahoots with a demon, of how they would lure children into the house and feast on their empty bodies after offering their souls to the demon that they had been rumoured to worship. I don't know why I feel the need to ask because I know they will. They all smile. "Of course. Sisters take care of each other till the end." And here I thought my life couldn't get any weirder. I never thought I would ever be caught up in a story of forbidden love. The tale as old as time. The story whereby starcrossed lovers fight tooth and nail to be together even though the odds are against them. The most popular must be the classic Romeo and Juliet and the least popular must be the one about angels and demons, the one I apparently feature in.

I did not want Zoe or Seraphina to mention it to anyone else. I cleared my throat gently and turned my attention back to our little group. “I don’t think it’s them, Charlotte is too young for this. Besides, I heard she’s out with her mother,” I said, keeping my voice calm. “Have you heard the stories about my father’s pack house? There have been reports of strange things happening there lately.” I added, wanting to distract them as quickly as possible. Zoe blinked and looked away from the lake. “You mean the hauntings?”

Now look at us.” “I don’t know about ghosts,” Isabel pipes up, looking at Beth, “but my home used to be haunted. My foster parents used to put this strange liquid on the walls of the house to keep whatever was haunting us at bay.”

Twenty miles after the driver got down a small road is connected to the highway leading to a dilapidated haunted house fifty kilometers north of the nearby village. Scary squeals of women are often heard from the house by the locals late in the night. But the villagers gave evidence that the house had been vacant for the last twenty years. The landlord of the house was contacted by the cops who supported the locals' evidence. Mysterious deaths have happened inside the haunted house since 1999 and the cops who came to investigate the matter met with death just like the woman. It is believed a ghost lives in the haunted house that does not like the woman and kills them in the most brutal way.

“About the swamp being haunted?” I nod. Even though we hadn’t grown up together, I’m pretty sure that we both had gotten the same tired ghost stories passed around in the hallways about such places around our hometowns. “I know this sounds crazy, but what if the stories are true?” Her tone is fervent, and her eyes shine with a hot certainty. “Not the witches and stuff. But there is something there, and I think…” She draws in a deep, steadying breath. “I think it’s a demon.”

A slow smile curved Drake’s lips as his gaze swept over to me. “If memory serves from our tour the other day, Hannah, Nightcrest is in possession of a rather famous haunted attraction, isn’t it? What was it called again? The Emily House?” My brows hiked upward as realization dawned on me; the Emily House was an attraction in Nightcrest seated at the top of a tall hill; an old mansion that was said to have been haunted by a spirit named Emily. Supposedly, a family had stayed there in the 80s and were terrorized by Emily until they ultimately just upped and left in the night, leaving all of their belongings behind.
