A slate grey Stormbringer was accompanied by two white, one black and one fawn brethren. The downpour of hail intensified into a full-blown hailstorm. The slate-grey beast was clearly the leader. Calm. “Soren,” I breathed, my voice barely there. “He’s called Obsidian. He’s a friend,” Soren said proudly. “He’s our ride.” Before I could decide if I was hallucinating, he was lifting me onto the creature’s surprisingly comfortable, leathery back. Obsidian shifted, muscles rolling beneath us, and then—with a single, mighty push of his wings—we were airborne.

Drayven narrowed his eyes at me, making me tilt my head. “I don’t want you.” Drayven’s lips pursed. “Too bad.” His smile returned slowly. “Because I’m not letting you go this time.” The shadows moved first, those damn creatures lunged from every direction. Storm reacted instantly. Her hands snapped upward and a burst of green light exoded outward from her palms. Two creatures were thrown back violently. I moved at the same time.
