The figure tilted its head, revealing hollow eyes that seemed to peer into our very souls. "I am Echo, the Remnant of Forgotten Memories. With the rift mended, countless memories have been lost, and I am their guardian." My heart raced. "We only wanted to save the realms, to restore balance." Echo's form wavered, shifting between clarity and obscurity. "Balance comes at a cost. Some memories fade, while others cling to existence. You have awakened them, and they seek solace."

“I’m a junkie for the stuff.” She introduced herself as Willa Irving, Tonya’s older sister. I’d never heard about her but she explained she had been born with a medical condition that made her gravely sick from birth and her family had seen her as a liability so they had kept her hidden in the dark room. She admitted to not having the opportunity to see the world outside so I described it to her. I told her about everything I’d experienced while I was there and she loved hearing my stories. “You have to go now. It was nice meeting you, Kira. I hope we meet again soon.” She smiled as she urged me to the door.

“It knows how to hold balance… but it chooses extremes first. Grief, then joy. Pain, then fleeting relief. It’s… evolving.” Sophia placed her hands on the edge of the growing structure. A boy, no older than ten, sitting in a windowless room, whispering to someone that wasn’t there. “Don’t let it in,” the boy said. “Don’t open the door.” Then it was gone. Ethan staggered back. His breathing quickened. It hadn’t been his memory. It hadn’t even been a memory he recognized. But it was real. He looked around the space again, realizing the carvings were everywhere etched across every surface, twisting upward along the curved walls and ceiling. The voice exhaled before speaking. “Terrible things. I need you, urgently.” “I’m at your service,” I said, straightening my posture. “What do you need me to do?”

They were being used as living batteries, their souls being siphoned to power the Northern siphons. "They are the first of the crop," Silas whispered. "Killian has turned the entire Outskirts into a farm. Every man, woman, and child who once looked down on you is now a vessel for the Rot. They are the 'Echo' of your past, Elara. And they are dying because you exist."

Gemma stood a short distance away, rain running down her face. I had never seen her look so broken. She held a dagger in one hand. She said, "Miles, I'm sorry. To you, to Zack, and to Grandma. One Echo went down screaming as a dart hit him. I closed my eyes and reached for the resonance inside me. Kael’s hand gripped my waist, grounding me. I focused on the pleasure still lingering in my body from earlier, on the bond between us, and pushed. A wave of blue-gold energy rippled outward from me. The soldiers stumbled. Some dropped their weapons as their own tech started glitching. Several nearby Echoes steadied, their eyes clearing. “It’s working!” Rafe shouted. But it wasn’t enough. More soldiers poured in. One of them spotted me and raised a strange rifle.
