The Way He Looked at Me
I lie, popping the cap and lifting the bottle toward his mouth.
He eyes it. “That says for external use only.”
“Then shut your mouth,” I say coolly, “and it’ll be external.”
He presses his lips together, flinching despite himself. His bottom lip is swollen, split, fuller on one side, bruised and tender. The top lip rests against it, blanching from the pressure. For the first time in years, he isn’t taunting me, isn’t pushing, isn’t trying to dominate the space.
