The bus pulled out of the station at five forty seven.
I watched Halcrest disappear through the window.
I pressed my hand flat against my stomach, just once, quietly.
"It is just us," I said softly. "But we are going to be okay."
Back at the estate, on the desk in the guest room, Vivienne's note sat folded and waiting.
And outside Sera's door, at exactly five fifty, Damien stopped walking.
He stood outside her door.
He knocked twice.
Silence.
He opened it.
The room was empty. The wardrobe was open. The note was gone from the desk because Vivienne had already found it, already read it, and was already sitting at the kitchen table with both hands over her mouth.
