Cars driving through empty space. People laughing. Traffic flowing like nothing was wrong. Then gone, then back and gone again. The headache slammed into me full force. “Melissa,” Jamal said sharply. “I see it,” I said through clenched teeth. “The anchor is not structural, it is event based.” The failsafe spoke immediately “Clarify.” “This zone is not anchored to a place,” I said “It is anchored to a moment.”

After this brutal engagement, that sensation surged to a breaking point. It was time. He extended his hand, locking onto Lucas with his spatial perception. With a thought, Lucas froze mid-motion. And somehow, that made it worse. “It didn’t hurt when they questioned me,” I continued, my voice steadier now, though my chest felt tight. “It didn’t hurt when they doubted me.” I lifted my gaze slightly. “But that one moment…” I exhaled slowly. “When he looked at me and said I’d be suspended…” My lips pressed together. “That was enough.” Enough to understand. Enough to stop hoping. Enough to— End it. I let out a small, tired laugh, though it held no humour.

He could feel it. He looked like a man who had watched the ground open up under his feet, totally unable to understand what was happening in front of him. “This isn’t real,” he muttered, his voice cracking into a rough whisper. “No… no, this is impossible!” Then, in a terrifying split second, the shock turned into wild rage.
