I turn to the left and there is a brown rogue wolf stalking towards me. You can always identify the rogues because they look mangey and deranged, like a dog who’s been abused and beaten. His fur is filthy, with a few patches missing, and he smells like vulture vomit. The combination of death and decay mixed with the burning, acidic scent of vomit is the worst possible combination.

“How did you come to work for my uncle? You’re not one of the wolves who left the pack with him...” Cole shakes his head. “No, I’m not. He picked me up along the way...” “Explain,” Octavius demands. Cole exhales, leaning against the edge of a table as he crosses his arms. “Lucien collects rogues. Since he was one himself, he sees them as… useful. He calls himself the King Rogue, if you can believe that...” I feel my wolf bristle at the title, the arrogance of it grating against me.

“Rouge... harder, please—” I panicked. I needed to get out. I took a shaky step backward, my hand reaching for the doorknob. Rouge stopped. Inside was another world: velvet walls, crystal chandeliers dripping blood-red light, and music that pulsed like a living heartbeat. Madame Rouge found me the second I stepped inside the private lounge. She wore a crimson gown and a smile sharp enough to cut glass. “Lot 13,” she purred, circling me. “Twenty-three. Virgin. Desperate. Perfect.” I wanted to run. But Jamie’s face flashed in my mind—pale, smiling through the pain. I let her lead me backstage. They gave me a black silk mask that covered half my face and a red dress that clung to every curve.

The dew-covered grass appears to be covered in a layer of silver as the light from the moon above reflects off the dewdrops. I almost sigh in relief at the sight of it. But a shadow flickers on the ground and I freeze, my bow already poised and ready to shoot.
