I went to my library and sat on my favorite chair. Soon, Hella came in and sat next to me. “What was that?” “I don’t know,” “You looked bothered,” “I am, she said Zaya’s immortal. Only pure ones could have that immortality, Zaya can’t be immortal.” No matter how I said that. I couldn’t find it assuring as it should be.

It can be caused because of uneven distribution or concentration of immortality factors in the body,” I read through the page in my mind, not even realizing that I had spoken it out loud. Almost everyone in the hall, including High lady, gaped at me blankly. Nesryn squinted her eyes. “How did you know about High lady’s sickness?”

I tell her and she pulls me into a big hug and then pulls away and says, “Shit they are going to kill each other.” I knew exactly what she was talking about. We both began to race through the sand to the sidewalk and then it happened. A large black van stopped in our path and four large men with masks on jumped out of the van and grabbed us. Emily and I tried fighting them off but they were too strong as they threw us in the back of the van and shut the door. Emily moved to me wrapping her arms around me like she was protecting me from them. “Leave her out of this. She isn’t one of us.” Emily said to the men and I realized that the men that took us were immortals just like herself and now me

Then the visions hit. They crash over me in waves, not memories exactly but fragments of something ancient and shared. I see the temple as it was thousands of years ago, whole and gleaming, guardians standing where the elders now kneel, their bodies marked with the same violet spirals, wielding shadows and light like weapons against a darkness that tried to swallow the valley. I see myself, or someone who looks like me, standing beside a man who looks like Kael, hands joined, power roaring between them to seal the wards. The images shift faster, showing battles won, betrayals that cracked the stone, a final desperate rite that sealed the heart of the temple away until two souls strong enough

It ignored every rule she’d ever read and paid her back with honesty in ways that almost made her laugh. Evenings, they read. Side by side at his small table, a lamp between them, Nothing the fox sprawled across their laps, oblivious and comfortable. Cultivation texts for her, array notes for him. Arguments happened—quiet and deep—about immortal sects or mushrooms (the only vegetable he reliably remembered to grow, apparently).

With a dangerous smile on her lips, she answered: “To the Vacil Empire.” The man and woman together with the baby headed to their destination.
