The landscape for this is really interesting now because 'vampire' as a category in YA has stretched so far. Most titles that become popular are firmly on the romance-drama axis, but a few still make me check the closet before bed. A book I'm surprised more people don't talk about for actual chills is 'The Coldest Touch' by Isabel Sterling. It positions a death-seer and a vampire against a paranormal killer, and the vampire mythology itself is treated as a bleak, painful curse. The scenes where the vampire character loses control aren't romanticized; they're frantic and desperate. Similarly, 'The Beautiful' series by Renée Ahdieh has these lush, gothic New Orleans settings, but underneath the ballgowns there's a genuinely creepy murder mystery with body horror elements. The vampires aren't sparkly; they're predators, and the human characters' fascination with them feels like a real danger. It's a balance I wish more books struck—letting the horror premise actually horrify, while still giving space for the teenage characters to navigate friendships and first loves.

Sometimes the horror comes from the perspective itself. 'The Weight of Blood' by Tiffany D. Jackson is a Carrie-inspired retelling, but Maddy's vampirism is this terrifying secret she has to manage while dealing with intense racial bullying and a town's hysteria. The horror isn't just the blood; it's the external pressure and the internal fear of what she is. That fusion feels very real to teenage experience, just amplified to a supernatural degree. I keep hoping for a resurgence of this blend, where the fangs aren't just decorative.
