You’re one of the only teachers who actually seems to want to help all of us.” I smiled and told her that I would be happy to help her in anyway I could because that was my job and I took it very seriously. She smiled, sat down, and crossed her legs. I noticed that she wasn’t wearing flats today, but was wearing a pair of beautiful open-toe high heels that were about an 1-1/2” high, with a very narrow heel. She started to move her leg back and forth, definitely calling attention to her heels.

My feet. I look down. The cup. The spilled drink. My favorite heels sitting in a puddle of green tea. "Shit." He looks down too. The mess spreads between us, ceramic pieces everywhere. "Your shoes," he says. "My heels." I wiggle my toes. They're soaked. "They're wet." He crouches down, looking at my feet like it matters. Like the world isn't spinning. "That's going to be painful to walk in." "I know." I bend down and slip them off. The cold floor hits my bare feet.

Since the chair he's in is the only one in the foyer, I take a seat on the floor to put on my socks and shoes. Cass hears me and watches me as I sit and I know the moment he sees my feet because he asks in shock, "What's wrong with your feet?" He's moved to kneel in front of me and looks like he's going to reach out for my foot when I stop him, saying, "Please don't touch my foot, it would be weird. It's just some blisters from my shoes, nothing out of the normal." "You should have told me your feet were hurting. We didn't need to dance so much. I think we got the point across that I wasn't dancing with other partners early enough," he says, completely oblivious to what heels are like.

"Switch feet, please." "Yes, Ma'am," he said, moving his other foot in place. He was so tall that I didn't have room to scoot back to avoid his other foot from returning to the same spot. I could only take up the scissors again and try not to think about how good it felt. "Your turn to tell me a story," he muttered, his face relaxed into an expression of peace.
